A Celebration of the West Coast Avant-Garde
Kohn Gallery has championed West Coast avant-garde artists from its space in Los Angeles for the past thirty years - beginning long before the postwar California art scene was recognized by the art world at large.
This summer, it presents a sweeping survey of the area’s groundbreaking artists from the 1950s to today–including works by the ”father" of assemblage art Wallace Berman, environmental art pioneer Lita Albuquerque, Light and Space artist Larry Bell and more.
The exhibition highlights the breadth of movements that flourished in California over the past six decades, the way they influenced contemporary artists on both coasts and the distinct West Coast sensibility that lies at the heart of it all.
