Chingaderas Sofisticadas - ARTINFO

Time and freedom will be examined at 'Chingaderas Sofisticadas’ at Kohn Gallery, Los Angeles

BY NICOLETTE LOIZOU

Kohn Gallery presents a group exhibition "Chingaderas Sofisticadas” at their Los Angeles venue.

The exhibition titled "Chingaderas Sofisticadas” brings together the works of nine prominent artists. These include Eduardo SarabiaGonzalo Lebrija and Milena Muzquiz - Muzquiz’s work with ceramics can be interpreted as an exercise ofscrutiny; the accumulation of elements seeks to imitate the uneven and contradictory way in which the human mind works. The resulting sculptures are near to the decorative arts, since they can function as vases, but they always shadow mere functionality and Cynthia Gutiérrez.  With a background in Visual Arts at the University of Guadalajara Gutiérrez has had several solo exhibitions such as Paráfrasis del estrago, Museo de Arte Raúl Anguiano (2016, Mexico), Coreografía del colapso, Proyecto Paralelo (2014, Mexico), Notas de Carnaval, MAZ (2011, Mexico). The artists use the mediums of photography, video, sound, and sculpture to examine the notions of time, freedom, play, and power, and explore the use of text, light, mixed-media, and language in their sculptural works. The exhibit is a part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, a far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialog with Los Angeles, taking place at more than 70 cultural institutions across Southern California.

Established in 1985 by Michael Kohn, Kohn Gallery has presented historically significant exhibitions in Los Angeles alongside exciting contemporary artists, creating meaningful contexts to establish links to a greater art historical continuum. It represents important West Coast artists with long careers and rich histories such as Joe Goode and Lita Albuquerque, works by Larry Bell, as well as Estates of Bruce Conner, Wallace Berman, John Altoon, and Charles Brittin. The gallery has an expanding roster of emerging and mid-career artists including Ori Gersht, Rosa Loy, Will Monk, Dennis Hollingsworth, Mark Ryden, Tom LaDuke, and Troika.
